This course is the first core payroll course of the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation.
Prerequisites: None
Students enrolling at a post-secondary institution must first register with the school and pay the tuition fees. Students must also register with the National Payroll Institute and pay the Institute’s course fee, and membership fee, if applicable.
Upon completion of Payroll Compliance Legislation (PCL), students will have a thorough understanding of payroll compliance requirements. They will be able to:
- Describe payroll’s objectives and stakeholders.
- Identify an employer/employee relationship.
- Apply federal and provincial legislation related to payroll including:
- The Canada Pension Plan;
- The Employment Insurance Act;
- The Income Tax Act;
- Employment standards legislation;
- Worker’s Compensation Acts;
- Quebec-specific legislation.
- Communicate payroll compliance requirements to various stakeholders.
Synchronous Courses: Post-Secondary Classroom and Virtual Classroom
Blended courses, completed through a post-secondary institution, are synchronous courses and are directed by the instructor. Students will attend and participate in classes and lectures at the same time as their peers.
The online midterm and final exams are proctored by the post-secondary institution.
Asynchronous Courses: Online directly through the National Payroll Institute (excluding challenge)
Online (Asynchronous) courses are self-directed, meaning students study and participate at their own pace. There is no scheduled class time and there are no lectures. Instead, students review the course content (course material, slides, chapter quizzes, etc.) according to their own schedule. Students are encouraged to use the “Ask the Instructor” messaging functionality to communicate any course related questions to the Instructor. Assignments, exams, and discussion activities have pre-determined due dates. Discussion activities are completed online through the Institute’s Learning Management System.
The online midterm and final exams are remote proctored through Examity®. The remote proctoring fee is included in the online course fee. The Institute will not cover any additional costs for students who choose to have their exam proctored through a test centre.
Both an overall grade of 65% and a mark of at least 65% on the final exam are required to pass the course. A minimum grade of 65% on the exam is required to pass the challenge. An online grade report will be available two weeks after the official end date of the course. For confidentiality reasons, marks cannot be given by phone, fax or email.
