- 1986-1987 Chairman
- Editor of DIALOGUE Magazine in 1987.
- Served on the Board of Directors for six years in roles that included Director of Education, Director of Publications, Vice-President of Member Services, as well as a term as Chairman.
- In the President's Message that appeared in the Fall 1986 issue of DIALOGUE, Marge wrote an article which epitomizes her dedication to payroll, and the CPA.
The dedication of payroll managers never fails to amaze me. What's more, the more their particular job demands, the more they are willing to give. I met a fellow payroll manager the other day. He was lining up double duty for himself - probably for the next two years. One job was to stay on top of all his present responsibilities as manager; the other was a full-time involvement in the implementation of a new software system. To the question, "How are you going to manage both jobs?" his reply was, "Well Marge, there are 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week."
''What dedication! What enthusiasm! What a fool!", I thought to myself; indeed, I hope my boss never hears about him. But then, how typical of most payroll people I know. Payroll has to be one of the most interesting areas of a corporation in which to work. It combines into one job human interest, flashing dollar bills (read paycheques), mathematical precision, creativity of computerization, legal jargon and interpretations, diplomacy, doggedness, and constant evolution. There is nothing stagnant or static here. Rather, it is a whirlwind featuring variety, excitement and challenge.
In presentations to both my department and outside services, I promote the "centre of the universe" concept. The centre of the universe is, of course, the payroll department. Where else do so many departments turn for so much information? We keep accounting, human resources, financial planning, data processing, not to mention the employees themselves, well serviced and happy. If we were not there, who else would hang around for long! Even I, in a candid moment, might admit what a fool I too have been.
It is important work which is done in our payroll departments. So it becomes easier to understand my voluntarily overworked colleague. He, along with all the other dedicated payroll managers out there, deserve our salute for setting standards of excellence.
