Statutory Holidays: Ensuring Compliance
CPA Web Seminar Series
PRESENTED DIRECT-TO-YOUR-DESKTOP by the Canadian Payroll Association
Archived Version
Topic Description
Are you in full compliance with Employment and Labour Standards on how you deal with statutory holidays at your organization?
Payroll practitioners have a big responsibility in transforming legislation into organizational policy. The complexity of employment and labour standards legislation and regulations can make this a big challenge. A case in point is statutory holidays, also called general and public holidays. While statutory holidays may seem like a simple and straight-forward part of employment policies at first glace, they can actually become quite complex when those policies are applied.
Join the CPA for this informative web seminar and explore the legislative aspects of statutory holidays and how they correlate to the administration of an organization’s employment policy. The session will look at the federal, provincial and territorial legislation related to statutory holidays for all jurisdictions across Canada, covering the following issues and questions:
- Statutory holiday observance
- What are employees entitled to when they work on a statutory holiday? Are you compliant?
- What are the statutory holiday pay requirements for eligible employees?
- What employees are not eligible for statutory holidays or statutory holiday pay?
- What is the correct way to calculate overtime in weeks where there is a statutory holiday?
- What are an employer's obligations when a new statutory holiday is introduced? Case study: Ontario Family Day
- Does an employment policy have to include something on statutory holidays?
This informative 90-minute session will include a 30-40 minute presentation, responses to pre-submitted questions and an open forum to ask your questions to our facilitators.
Participants are encouraged to submit their questions in advance and can do so by emailing syeda@payroll.ca before May 5, 2010.
This session will be facilitated and delivered by members of the CPA’s Payroll Resource Group.
