Taxable Benefits:  Keeping Up With What’s New

Topic Description

On June 11, at the CPA's 27th Annual Conference and Trade Show, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of State (Agriculture and Agri-Food), announced some significant changes to the administration of six taxable benefits via a pre-recorded announcement. The CPA has been working with the CRA for some time on influencing more effective and efficient administration of taxable benefits for employers. The changes recently announced support this work. They reduce the administrative burden for gifts and awards, overtime meal allowances and four other benefits, increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of payroll-related legislation for all stakeholders: employers, government, employees and the general public. The technical details on the six taxable benefit can be found in the CRA’s Technical News Number 40.

Participate in this informative Web seminar facilitated by representatives from the CRA to ensure that you remain compliant with the CRA’s administrative policies related to the changes announced in June,a s well as more recent changes to the treatment of tuition fees and scholarships. The following will be discussed:

This informative 90-minute session will include a 40-minute presentation, responses to pre-submitted questions and an open forum to ask your questions to the CRA representatives .

About the Speaker

The speaker for this session, Dian Hardiman, is from the Trust Accounts Division of the Canada Revenue Agency in Ottawa. The Trust Accounts Programs Division works to ensure that employers and workers meet the withholding, remitting and reporting requirements of the Income Tax Act, the Canada Pension Plan, the Employment Insurance Act and the Excise Tax Act, and is responsible for the administrative policies related to the assessment of taxable benefits.  

Dian Hardiman is a Senior Program Officer in the Trust Accounts Division at CRA Headquarters, Ottawa. She has worked for CRA for 29 years, specializing in payroll. Dian was closely involved in the development of the new and amended taxable benefit policies. She worked closely with other government and external stakeholders to ensure that they were fair, reasonable and helped reduce the administrative burden for employers.  

The session will be facilitated by Steven Van Alstine, Vice-President of Compliance Programs and Services for the CPA.
